Do you buy the Halloween candy that you like, or do you buy the Halloween candy that will not tempt you? [Does anyone actually like Bit-o-Honey?]

When I moved to Ohio I realized that, unlike the 4th of July, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas or New Year's, the day that Halloween is celebrated is not set in stone. Around here, some towns have their kids trick or treat on the weekend before October 31st for reasons that have escaped me. [Let's celebrate Thanksgiving on a Sunday, hmm? That actually makes sense, so you're not working all day long and then pulling the best American meal of the year out of your ear 24 hrs later.]

Our town always celebrates on the 31st, which means that many years our flat, well-lit, sidewalked town with houses close together is overrun with 'people from off' coming to double dip on their trick or treating. I am quite curious this year, as Halloween falls on a Saturday, to see what reasons folks will invent to come trick or treat in our town. It's possible folks will keep to their own towns, and in that case I'll need to change up my game. See, I usually buy candy I DON'T want to have leftovers of, so I am not tempted into additional snackage.

As a side note, I've got kids with peanut and dairy allergies on my block, so I always have 2 bowls of candy: one that only contains nut- and dairy-free packages (i.e., pure packets of sugary goodness) and one that may have nuts and/or dairy. I've got signs on each bowl, and often kids thank me. Consider doing that yourself.

With all the hoopla surrounding the kickoff to #Choctoberfest, I decided my first recipe would be a really simple one. In keeping with the theme of my blog--Practical Support for Local Eating--I'm going to share a recipe for when you have piles of turnips lettuce [focus on #Choctoberfest] Halloween candy lying around. What? Never happens to you? I guess we have always lived in generous neighborhoods since even the disabled kid manages a good haul and he doesn't hit half the houses his sister does.

When you've got a bunch of excess candy, consider mixing it up with dried fruits and nuts to make trail mix. We ate trail mix as snacks on our Local Eating on the Road trip, and the kids happily serve themselves, and friends, trail mix as snacks instead of asking me 'when's dinner'.

I like to use the colorful candy coated type chocolates in my trail mix. I store it in wide mouth canning jars. It's easy to reach in and grab out a handful or pour some into a single serving dish--helps with portion size too. I use these reusable storage lids (Amazon affiliate link) to keep it fresh. [They are also useful for transporting smoothies, corralling Green Tomato Bacon Jam, and are an excellent way to cover Apple Fig Chutney or Cranberry Salsa once you've opened a jar from the pantry.

    1. Tasha,
I do too--no more cherry picking just the things I like, and leaving the rest for someone else!
      Thanks!

  2. Great pre Halloween post. I live in the country and have not had beggars since we moved in nearly 15 years ago. I miss the little ghosts and goblins.

    1. Wendy,
I think you ought to buy only the candy you like in that case!
      Thanks!

    1. Liz,
You gotta wonder what leverage the Bit-o-Honey people have to get their candy included in so many variety packs. Makes you think . . .
      Thanks!

  4. What a great idea! I love trail mixes and since I always buy the candy I like (your idea is better) I am sure to love the trail mix even more. :-)

    1. Linda,
I don't know, there's something to be said for having the candy *you* want, you know? I've decided to up my exercise by walking to the store to get milk (the dogs and I get a nice walk as the kids go through gallons every other day or so), so perhaps I will earn my Almond Joy!
      Thanks!

  5. Favorite chocolate? Since I'm in Germany and live so close to it, Ritter Sport is my favorite...especially the whole hazelnut milk chocolate!!

    1. Chris,
Ah, the smooth creaminess of European chocolates. I miss that, though this time of year I'm really missing gluhwein more than anything else.
      Thanks!

  6. Also, Miss Kirsten: I LOVE Bit-o-Honey and I buy candy I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, but for some reason kids love, e.g. Skittles and nerds (I consider it a service to all of humanity that I refuse to serve Twizzlers or Red Vines...what the heck ARE those "candies"!)

    1. Chris--you're the one fan! We'll make you their #1 fan! My kids like all sorts of odd candy--those sour gummy things coated in citric acid? Are you kidding me? To each his own.
As for Twizzlers, I would love to see someone make a useful item (escape rope or shelter) out of them. They seem indestructible.
      Thanks!

  7. The darker the chocolate the better. I love dark brownies and a fudgy frosting

    1. Mommar6,
Yum, dark chocolate rocks! I've even got my kids preferring dark chocolate, which makes sense since as a kid I loved the darker Mounds & Almond Joy candy in my trick or treat bag.
      Thanks!

  8. This trail mix looks so good! And I really like there is some dried fruit in it, so much candy happens at Halloween

    1. Jennifer,
      Yes, candy happens at Halloween.
      I'm OK with that.
The other 364 days are not so candy-centric, and that's a ratio I can live with.
      Thanks!

    1. Erin,
While I love the idea of baking with the candy-coated stuff, I hate how the coating dissolves and looks weird. I'll stick with candy bars for baking with leftovers, and play with snacks for the rest.
      Thanks!

  10. Such a good idea! I have put it in caramel corn before. I only get leftovers via my kids' hauls--no trick-or-treaters here, alas. My only sadness really about living rurally. Well that and my kids can't bike around a neighborhood. But that is more THEIR sadness lol!

    1. Laura,
Where do your kids trick or treat if they get candy and you don't have to give any out?
How do I get in on that action?

  11. I love the idea of making my own trail mix. I've been eating enough of it lately too that I really ought to do this.

I suppose we could all just sit around and eat it, but this is more fun and festive I think.
